A meeting preliminary to the setting up of the Friends League of Nations Association was held on 24 July 1918, when Joseph Bevan Braithwaite, Juliet Morse, R B Hay, Henry Marriage Wallis, Edmund Henry Gilpin, Samuel Gill and Havelock Ellis were present. It was decided that in view of Yearly Meeting of that year having declined to endorse proposals for a League of Nations, efforts should be made to discover how many Friends were concerned to do so, by a circular sent out to all adult Friends.(1) It was reported on 4 September 1918 to the committee that 2092 favourable replies had been received, and 112 unfavourable; by the committee meeting of 15 October 1918, the former had increased to 3102. Attempts were made to find a secretary for the committee.(2) At a meeting of signatories on 1 November 1918, a committee was elected, which proceeded to nominate a chairman, secretary and treasurer.(3) Following the minute of Meeting for Sufferings (qv) of 4 February 1921, that a League of Nations Watching Committee (qv) be appointed, and the Meeting's minute of 6 May 1921, accepting John William Graham's nomination of additional members to this committee, on behalf of the Friends League of Nations Association, the Association recommended its members that it should cease to exist, and that they should support the new Committee, and the League of Nations Union. The last meeting of the Friends League of Nations Association was held on 8 June 1921. The small balance remaining in the Association's hands was authorised for the transfer to the League of Nations Watching Committee.(4) Recorded in 'Book of Meetings' (1921): President 1918- Lord Gainford Vice-president 1918-1921 E W Brookes 1918- Lewis Fry Chairman of committee 1918-1921 Joseph Bevan Braithwaite Treasurer 1918-1921 Robert H Marsh Secretary 1918-1921 Margaret Sefton-Jones 1918-1921 Juliet Morse ______________________ 1.
