Quaker Social Responsibility and Education department brings together the work of the Social Responsibility Council (qv) (which in turn united the Penal Affairs Committee (qv), the Race Relations Committee (qv) and the Social and Economic Affairs Committee (qv)), the work of the Friends Education Council (qv) (except the Children and Young People's Committee) and the Quaker Work Camps Committee (qv). Its tasks were to express and further Friends' concerns in the fields of social responsibility and education; to help the Society come to an informed judgment about new concerns; and to put Friends in touch with opportunities for action and involvement. This includes helping Friends both locally and nationally to mobilise and support those involved in education, in voluntary and professional social work, and in work for justice, reconciliation and understanding in the community. The department was also concerned to share Friends insights in social and educational matters with the community as a whole, making representations as necessary to government departments and other national bodies.(1) The Quaker Social Responsibility and Education department had a Central Committee responsible to Meeting for Sufferings (qv) “for the formulation and presentation of policy and for the overall management of the department’s work; for budgeting and finance in consultation with the Administrative Committee (qv); and for the deployment of staff. It establishes functional committees as required [and working groups] and reviews their work. It is responsible for establishing an effective departmental nominations committee, working closely with Meeting for Sufferings Nominations Committee (qv) and for taking matters referred by Meeting for Sufferings either for consideration with the representative council or for urgent attention and action”.(2) _____________________ 1.
